What is an American?

What really defines an Amercian? Being free, born in America, race, culture, what determines an American? Is it a piece of paper saying you are a United Stated Citizen? Is it just being born in the United States? But What if you are born in a different country, and then come to America? An American to me is a United States citizen, someone born and raised in America. It is someone that takes pride in their country. Someone that is equal to their neighbor even thought they might have more or less. An Amercian works to keep America The land of the free. An American comes in all different shapes, sizes, and color. Every American has a different talent or gift to make the world a better place. I feel like we are all immigrants though because our family at one point or another all started off in a different country. They traveled over to the United States at some point in time. That is why you can become an American citizen. A lot of people want to claim America because we are a free country and life is easier over here. I think that people respect America and how far we have come and remain a free country. An American is someone that sticks up for their country and takes pride in being able to vote who runs their country. Over all I think an American is an average person like you and me. Although we might not all look alike we have one thing in common, we are proud to live in the land of the free. An American is someone that stand up for their country when everyone else is putting it down. A true American celebrates the Fourth of July. An Amercian is someone that takes a stand and follows their dreams.

  1. I appreciate the depth of your answer and that you've acknowledged the difficulty in defining the term 'American.' My question for you then, is an individual still an American if they don't believe in the American dream or do not support some of the ideals you've mentioned?
